Giving Tuesday Day of Volunteering

Untitled design-2.png

Many often think Giving Tuesday is only about collecting donations, when in fact 37% of Giving Tuesday is done by volunteering.

In honor of Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2020, we are hosting a volunteer event to serve those in our community. Our goal is to deliver joy, love, and furniture to 14 additional families to make their Christmas extra special.

But we cannot do this alone. Sign up for one of our volunteer shifts today!

Hello Furniture Mission Friends and Family!

The holidays are some of the best times to make memories and enjoy the little moments with our families and friends. However, for others, it can be a quick and cold walk down memory lane of heartache and yearning for loved ones lost. It had me thinking: what is in a memory?

Is it a smell, a glimpse or a flash back of the moment, or a specific place that brings you back to better days? So many of my memories are triggered by all three of these things. At the Furniture Mission I have found that we are the collectors of memories. Except as the memories or donations are captured, we hold them tightly for only a moment until they are on to their next adventure.

I recently helped a furniture donor who had to part with a living room chair, but this was not just your typical chair. She had recently lost her father, and this was his “spot”. We all have those, right? That place in our home that we claim, and it’s an unspoken rule that no one else will sit there because it belongs to you. Well, this en-counter gave me this incredible vision of who this man was, and the thought of his routine as a father, grandfather and friend. It was a vivid image of morning coffee and the newspaper, afternoon naps, and an evening of news shows and peanuts. What I was really envisioning was his legacy and the reality of how grateful I was to be a part of it.

You see, as you walk through the Furniture Mission, a chair is no longer a chair. It had a life before it came to us, and we are honored to give it new life when it leaves. A few days later I watched that chair make its exit with its new family. I felt the donor’s hug and was overcome with joy to see that it was going to a mother with young children. I stood watching her showing patience with each of her children, and I thought about the bedtime sto-ries that were going to be read in that chair, the tears that would be rocked away, and all the little moments that were gifted from one man’s legacy.

When I became a part of the Furniture Mission family, I didn’t see it the way that I see it now, and it’s important for me to share this with all of you. The definition of a legacy is to be remembered for what YOU want to be re-membered for. Whether you do that with the donation of your household furniture or financially, we are truly grateful.

“And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

Happy Holidays & Many Blessings,

Janean Michalov
